Democrats in Congress are taking on the Supreme Court with a little help from friends in the Oval Office. Senators are writing legislation that would override the Hobby Lobby decision and force for-profit corporations to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage even if they work for businesses with religious qualms. The bill says that an employer "shall not deny coverage of a specific health care item or service," as required by federal law, but does not cover nonprofit religious organizations or houses of worship. “Since the Supreme Court decided it will not protect women’s access to health care, I will,” said Senator Patty Murray. The bill is being developed in collaboration with the Obama administration, and could be on the floor by next week. House Democrats are working on a companion bill, which will have a harder time passing the GOP-controlled chamber.
