U.S. Deploys 350 More Troops to Iraq

Not for combat.

President Obama authorized an additional 350 troops to Baghdad to guard the U.S. Embassy and personnel. The troops won’t be for combat roles, the White House made clear. (Though reports on the ground say there may already be U.S. troops in combat in Iraq.) “The Department of Defense will continue to plan and prepare further military options should they become necessary, and we will remain ready to protect our diplomats, our citizens, and our interests in Iraq,” the Pentagon said. Meanwhile, Iraq’s parliament was shaken after being stormed by family members of Iraqi soldiers who were victims of an alleged ISIS massacre in June.
