Largely non-violent protests in Berkeley, California erupted into chaos Saturday night. The protests started with peaceful marching, but the San Francisco Chronicle reported “they were soon joined by groups of black-masked demonstrators looking for trouble.” Some protesters threw bottles and smashed windows, and masked looters broke into a Radio Shack. Multiple BART stations were forced shut due to the protests. Two police officers were injured. About 100 police officers in riot gear fired tear gas on 400 protesters, but also hit civilians who happened to be in the area that night. “I’ve never experienced that and I’m an old hippie,” said Elaine Dunlap, a 74-year-old woman who was sprayed with tear gas after leaving a concert with her husband.
