On Thursday, Ava DuVernay became the first black woman to be nominated for best director at the Golden Globes. DuVernay’s film, Selma, which chronicles the civil-rights marches of Selma, Alabama, also received a Best Picture, Drama nod and a best actor nomination for its star, David Oyelowo. Oyelowo told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, “She’s made a little bit of history. It’s so wonderful.” Selma is DuVernay’s third film; in 2012, she became the first black woman to win the best director prize at the Sundance Film Festival for her second film, Middle of Nowhere.
