A total of 54 soldiers have been sentenced to death by firing squad by a Nigerian court on Wednesday for refusing to go out to recapture towns taken by Boko Haram. The soldiers were charged with court-martials for mutiny, assault, cowardice, and refusing to fight. An additional five soldiers who were similarly charged were acquitted. Troops in Nigeria frequently argue that they are not paid in full, are left in the field without enough ammunition or food, and are outgunned by Boko Haram.
