The president of the Boy Scouts of America called for an end to the organization’s ban on gay leaders Thursday, saying, “we must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be..any other alternative will be the end of us as a national movement.” Robert Gates, the former secretary of defense under President Obama and President George W. Bush, also said that religious sponsors of local Scout troops should still be able to set their own policies about leaders. The ban on gay scout troops was voted down in 2013 but the ban on gay leaders remains.
