A filmmaker and activist named Bree Newsome was arrested early Saturday after police caught her trying to take down the Confederate flag in front of the South Carolina Statehouse. Newsome was halfway up the 30-foot flagpole when police arrived. Instead of coming down, she continued all the way up and took down the flag. "We removed the flag today because we can't wait any longer," Newsome said in a written statement. "We can't continue like this another day. It's time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality." Both Newsome and a man who had also crossed the fence surrounding the flag were arrested. The flag was raised again a short while later. Newsome was released later in the day.
