Part of Interstate Collapses After Flood

STORMY

California stretch of I-10 closed “indefinitely.”

California officials said the Interstate 10 Freeway has been closed “indefinitely” in both directions after a bridge was swept away by heavy rains and flooding Sunday, shutting down a busy route between Southern California and Arizona. The California Highway Patrol said a 30-foot-by-50-foot portion of the eastbound interstate was “washed away and the bridge is gone” near the town of Desert Center, California. Earlier Sunday, a truck crashed into the collapsed area and the driver was extricated by firefighters and taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, according to the Highway Patrol and Cal Fire’s Riverside division. A passenger was able to exit the vehicle without any injuries. The state was hit with heavy rains and thunderstorms over the weekend, breaking rainfall records in at least 11 locations, said National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Sirard.
