Former Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, who died in July, had the degenerative brain condition likely caused by repeated blows to the head. An autopsy found that on a scale of 1 to 4, Stabler had high Stage 3 chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, according to Boston University researches. Stabler died on July 8 of colon cancer at the age of 69. Over several months, Stabler’s brain was dissected for clues to help understand his final years and the impact of CTE on the brains of former athletes. Stabler is one of the highest profile athletes to have been discovered to have developed the disease.
