Hissene Habre, Chad’s former dictator, was convicted of crimes against humanity on Monday. The charges included rape, sexual slavery, and ordered killings of as many as 40,000 people. Habre, who led the country from 1982 to 1990, was sentenced to a life term in the first African Union trial against a former leader for human rights abuses. He has repeatedly denied the court’s accusations. The trial took place in Senegal, where Habre has been living since he fled Chad in 1990.
