A federal judge in Texas has temporarily blocked President Obama’s directive to the nation’s public schools that transgender students be allowed to use the restrooms consistent with their gender identity. The decision applies to public schools nationwide. U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor issued the order on Sunday, before classes began in Texas and throughout other states. Texas and 12 other states challenged Obama’s rule as unconstitutional during a hearing in Fort Worth. In May, Obama issued the directive just days after the Justice Department sued North Carolina over a state law requiring people to use bathrooms consistent with their gender at birth.
