A group of activists responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial tweet about flag burning by literally burning foot-long U.S. flags in front of the Trump International Hotel in New York on Tuesday. Just hours earlier, Trump had suggested anyone who burns a U.S. flag should either have their citizenship revoked or face a year in jail—a proposal that sparked an angry outcry on social media. The protest in New York involved seven members of the Revolutionary Communist Party, a group whose members had earlier burned a flag at the Republican National Convention in July. In accordance with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 1989, flag burning is protected by the First Amendment.
