Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday morning defended President-elect Donald Trump’s unfounded declaration that “millions” of people voted illegally on Election Day, without citing evidence to support the claim.
“I don’t know if that’s not true, John,” Priebus, Trump’s soon-to-be chief of staff, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He said there are “estimates all over the map.” When pressed further by host John Dickerson, Priebus said “no one really knows” and “it’s possible” that millions of votes were cast illegally.
“There is no evidence that it happened in millions of votes in California,” Dickerson responded. He asked Priebus whether Trump needs to “tighten up his standards of proof” before he becomes president.
“I think the president-elect is someone who has pushed the envelope and caused people to think in this country,” Priebus said. “He’s not taking conventional thought on every single issue, and has caused people to look at things that maybe they’ve taken for granted.”
