Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell speaks with the media at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., February 17, 2017.

When asked if Mexico will pay for the U.S. border wall President Donald Trump wants constructed, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responded flatly: “Uh, no.” McConnell made the remark during an interview with Politico Playbook. The wall, which could cost as much as $20 billion, was a cornerstone of Trump’s presidential campaign. The president pledged over and over that Mexico would foot the bill, but since becoming commander in chief Trump has waffled, saying Mexico will “pay us back,” meaning American taxpayers will foot the bill at the outset. Mexico has said it will not, under any circumstances, pay for the wall.
