For a staggering sum of $38.1 million, an anonymous bidder won a red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta on Thursday at Bonhams. The amount is a record, passing the $30 million spent last year on a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196 race car. The car was also reportedly the longest single ownership for that model of Ferrari, and was held by one family for 49 years. While driving it, French racer Henri Oreiller crashed the car and died of injuries. It was later bought and saved by Fabrizio Violati, the son of a wealthy Italian family, who kept it for decades.
