Holly Petraeus and Paula Broadwell

Paula Broadwell couldn’t stay away from David Petraeus, which sometimes meant rubbing elbows with his wife. In June 2011, when the retired four-star general appeared before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence for his confirmation as CIA director, Broadwell sat just six seats down from Holly Petraeus, whom she had described in her biography of the general, All In, as a “wonderful military spouse.

Liberty Ross and Kristen Stewart

Here’s a little tip for Hollywood directors who want to have affairs—don’t cast your wife and mistress in the same movie. At the London premiere of Snow White and the Hunstman, Kristen Stewart, who came between the film’s director, Rupert Sanders, and his wife, Liberty Ross, posed for a photo with Ross. But in this photo, another woman came between the two women—actress Charlize Theron.

Brandi Glanville and LeAnn Rimes

Four years after LeAnn Rimes stole Brandi Glanville’s husband, Eddie Cibrian, the country singer and the Real Housewife of Beverly Hills have tried to play nice in public. In March, the two were photographed at a soccer game for Glanville’s son Jake. But even as late as last week, Glanville admitted that it’s not exactly a love fest between them. “OK, you win,” she told Access Hollywood. “Now go make music.”

Maria Shriver and Mildred Baena

For Maria Shriver, there was no escaping interaction with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mistress—Mildred Baena was the couple’s housekeeper. Baena was even pregnant with the actor’s love child at the same time Shriver was carrying Schwarzenegger’s son Christopher. Then in 2011, Radar Online published a photo of the two women posing with Maria’s brother, Anthony Shriver. No doubt they wouldn’t have been all smiles had she known at the time that Baena was Arnold’s mistress.

Cynthia Lennon and Yoko Ono

In 1968, Cynthia Lennon returned from a holiday in Greece and caught her husband in bed with Yoko Ono. The couple soon divorced and John Lennon married Ono, with whom he remained until his death in 1980. Thirty years later, the two women attended a gallery exhibition of Julian Lennon’s photographs in New York, and posed with their sons. They even hugged, proving all you need is love.

Danielle Mitterrand and Anne Pingeot

The scene at Francois Mitterrand’s funeral was quintessentially French—standing at the late president’s graveside in 1996 was his wife, Danielle, and longtime mistress, Anne Pingeot, along with their love child, Mazarine Pingeot. Mrs. Mitterrand even consoled her husband’s illegitimate daughter at the service. “It was instinct," she later told Liberation.

Mia Farrow and Soon-Yi Previn

Although Woody Allen never married Mia Farrow, the two were a couple for more than a decade, and raised several children together—including Allen’s current wife, Soon-Yi. Farrow and Soon-Yi, whom she adopted in the late 1970s, were often photographed together on family outings, including several with Allen. Then in 1992, it was photographs that tore the family apart—when Farrow discovered nude pictures the director had taken of her stepdaughter. Allen married Soon-Yi five years later, but the wounds have not completely healed. In June, Allen’s son Ronan tweeted: “Happy father’s day—or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law’s day.”

Princess Diana and Camilla Parker-Bowles

“There were three of us in this marriage,” Princess Diana famously said of her relationship to Prince Charles in 1995, “so it was a bit crowded.” The other, woman, of course, was Charles’s longtime lover Camilla Parker-Bowles. A year before Diana married the prince, she and Parker-Bowles were photographed together at the Ludlow Races, where Charles was competing. In 2005, eight years after Diana’s death, the Prince of Wales married Camilla and she became the Duchess of Cornwall.

Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor

“I can pick good food,” Debbie Reynolds joked last year, “but I can’t pick a good man.” At least she has a sense of humor about her tumultuous love life. In 1957, Reynolds and her husband, Eddie Fisher, acted as best man and matron of honor at Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding to Mike Todd. A year later, after Todd’s death, Fisher dumped Reynolds for Taylor. “Still, if your husband’s going to leave you for anyone, it might as well be Elizabeth Taylor,” Reynolds said. “She was beautiful, smart, and a very sexual woman, and I was very different—not exactly a sex kitten. I told him she’d throw him out eventually and that’s exactly what happened. But he wasn’t the brightest of men.”

Sarah and Hagar

Of any husband who ever took a mistress, Abraham might have had the best excuse—his wife insisted on it. According to the Book of Genesis, Sarah offered her handmaiden to Abraham because she was barren herself and wanted him to have a child, an image depicted throughout art history, including by Adriaen ven der Werff. And like a good tabloid story, the love triangle quickly got more complicated. Hagar became pregnant with Abraham’s child and Sarah insisted that she be banished to the desert. Then Sarah became pregnant with Abraham’s child, Isaac. As for Hagar’s son, he grew up to be the Muslim prophet Ishmael.
