Barneys New York's Groundbreaking Campaign
For its Spring 2014 campaign, Barneys New York produced a series of ground-breaking photos that featured 17 transgender individuals modeling the latest collections from the likes of Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Givenchy, Proenza Schouler, and The Row. "This campaign is all about telling the remarkable stories of these 17 transgender men and women," said creative director of Barneys, Dennis Freedman. "Our goal was to convey the strength, beauty, and courage of these extraordinary individuals through the iconic photographs and films of Bruce Weber, as well as the insightful writing of Patricia Bosworth. Great progress has been made in regards to the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. Unfortunately, the struggle for transgender equality continues. In the end, it is our hope that we can make a difference through this campaign." Alongside the images, on February 11, Weber's 15-minute film celebrating the campaign will be screened, followed by a conversation between the photographer and Freedman, Mara Keiseling, and models from the campaign. The video will also be unveiled eclusively on Barneys New York's website, The Window, and will be displayed in the store's windows through March 16th.
