In a major victory for moderates and women, the kingdom of Jordan on Tuesday voted to drop a controversial provision in its penal code that enabled a rapist to evade punishment if he married his victim. Following an emotional debate, legislators in the nation’s parliament voted narrowly to drop the clause, known as Article 308. Tunisia, Egypt, and Morocco have all also done away with similar provisions in the past.
