A statue of the Holocaust victim Anne Frank in Amsterdam was vandalized with pro-Palestine graffiti over the weekend, according to the Times of Israel. The display was tagged with the words “Free Gaza” while the girl’s hands were painted red, the second time that the statue was hit with graffiti in less than a month after a previous incident on July 9. Frank’s diary, published after her death, chronicled her family’s time hiding from the Nazis and made her one of the world’s most famous victims of the Holocaust. The shocking act of vandalism also came on the 80th anniversary of the Frank family’s arrest and deportation—though it remains unclear whether the suspects, who have not been identified, were aware of the day’s significance. Frank later died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Police in Amsterdam are currently investigating both defacements.
