In a scathing letter released Sunday evening, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid suggested FBI Director James Comey “may have broken the law” in announcing the latest investigative inquiries into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. By announcing Friday that the FBI had uncovered new evidence in the Clinton probe, Reid wrote, Comey “rushed to publicize... thin innuendo” about emails that may not actually be relevant to questions about the former secretary of State’s email practices. “Your actions in recent months have demonstrated a disturbing double standard for the treatment of sensitive information, with what appears a clear intent to aid one political party over another,” Reid wrote in the letter to Comey, a life-long Republican until he changed his registration to independent this past summer. “Through your partisan actions, you may have broken the law.” Reid alleged that while Comey released the Clinton news, he has deliberately withheld “explosive information” regarding “close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisers, and the Russian government.” According to the senator, this may constitute a violation of the Hatch Act, the law prohibiting political activity by Executive Branch officials.
