President Trump has offered veiled criticism of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s handling of Brexit negotiations, saying he’d have been “tougher” in talks with the European Union. After the two leaders sought to mend ties in their “special relationship” during the World Economic Forum on Thursday, Trump was asked in an ITV interview to air Sunday whether May was in a “good position” on Brexit. “Would it be the way I’d negotiate? No, I wouldn’t negotiate it the way it’s negotiated,” Trump said. “I would have said that the European Union is not cracked up to what it’s supposed to be and I would have taken a tougher stand in getting out,” he said, without offering specifics. The comments appear likely to irk May, who is already under pressure from Conservative lawmakers who fear she may soften the terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union.
