It’s no surprise that comforting, sweet drinks are loaded with sugar and fat—most are made with milk and chocolate. But just how much of the unhealthy stuff is in a medium-size drink at your local coffee shop may shock you.
A candy-cane hot chocolate at Tim Hortons packs eight canes’ worth of sugar. A peppermint white-chocolate mocha from Starbucks has 75 percent of the daily allowance for saturated fat. A salted caramel mocha from Caribou Coffee has more calories and fat than a Big Mac.
To compile the list of the season’s most gluttonous drinks, The Daily Beast combed the holiday menus of national coffeehouse chains where nutrition facts were listed. Drinks were compared and ranked based on calorie, saturated fat, and sugar content. For each drink, the medium size was used for comparison, as was the highest fat milk option and extras such as whipped cream, if available.
