A 15,000-people party at Isla Vista near the UC-Santa Barbara campus took a turn for the worse when police tried to break it up when it became unruly. More than 100 people were arrested, and dozens were hospitalized. Six police officers were injured, and police used tear gas and foam projectiles to break up the crowd. The violence started when a university officer was struck in the face with a backpack full of alcohol bottles. "Our community is in shock today over what happened last night,'' a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said. "It's unbelievable to see people throwing rocks, bricks and bottles and beer cans at law enforcement officers."
