Up to 1,000 Syrians crossed overnight into Lebanon on Saturday in search of refuge from the increasing violence in their homeland. The exodus began after Syrian security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters across the country, killing 20 people. Activists say the dead included two children aged 12 and 13. The opposition says some 1,400 people have been killed as the government has brutally cracked down on an uprising demanding the end to President Bashar al-Assad's rule. The protests renew each Friday after weekly Muslim prayers.
