Hurricane Maria has made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 155 mph as dawn broke over the island. But through the long night, even as news came in of devastation in tiny Dominica and concerns grew about the fate of St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which took a direct hit overnight. Social-media sites were crammed early Wednesday with families seeking news about the fate of the islanders, with few reports trickling out beyond texts indicating widespread devastation. On Puerto Rico, more than 40 percent of the U.S. territory was already in the dark from damage from Hurricane Irma. Unlike Irma, Maria will barrel right through San Juan and its population of 1 million, and it is only a matter of time before the whole island loses power and water service completely.
