A local ritual in Indonesia involving swimming in the ocean turned deadly on Saturday night when 11 people drowned after large waves hit the beach. Before the incident, a local resident in East Java warned the group, which numbered 24 people in total, to avoid the sea “because of big waves,” according to chief rescuer I Wayan Suyatna. The 13 survivors, which include a 2-year-old, are being treated at a health clinic.
