At least 12 women are dead and dozens more are sick after receiving sterilization surgeries as part of a free, nationwide program by the government in India. The women were part of a group of 83 villagers under the age of 32 from Chhattisgarh. The cause of death was reportedly either blood poisoning or hemorrhagic shock. Dozens more are still hospitalized in critical condition. The Indian government performs millions of free sterilizations of men and women, and in most of the cases women are paid a one-time incentive fee of about $10-$20.
