On Friday, the Obama administration authorized another 1,500 troops to Iraq for a “non-combat role to train, advise and assist Iraqi Security Forces.” The additional deployments almost double the American military presence in Iraq to 3,000 but do not include ground combat forces. The troops are needed to train and help Iraqi forces, including in Anbar Province, which is under ISIS control. Also on Friday, the White House requested $5.6 billion from Congress to fight ISIS.
