166 Dead in Turkish Mine Blast

underground horror

Up to 300 may still be trapped.

The death toll from a coal-mine explosion and fire in Turkey’s western province of Manisa is up to 166 workers with 80 injured, and between 200 and 300 still trapped inside. The cause of the initial blast is thought to be an exploded power distribution unit. There were nearly 800 people in the mine at the time of the accident, but because the fire began during a change in shifts, there is uncertainty over how many people are still trapped underground. The mine's depth and tunnel length have hampered rescue efforts.
