SERVER DOWN

Silk Road was just the beginning.

On Friday, the FBI and Europol arrested 17 people throughout the world and seized hundreds of domains in a global crackdown of the Dark Web drug trade. Thursday’s bust of drug market Silk Road was only of many online contraband exchanges to be taken down. Drug sites weren’t the only targets. Money laundering sites, such as Cash Machine, Cash Flow, Golden Nugget and Fast Cash, were also targeted in Friday’s bust. Agents have also seized $1 million in bitcoin, $250,000 in cash, and an array of gold, silver, computers, and other loot from those arrested. It is unclear how law enforcement was able to work around anonymity software used by Silk Road and these other enterprise. “This is something we want to keep for ourselves,” said Troels Oerting, head of the European Cybercrime Center. “The way we do this, we can’t share with the whole world, because we want to do it again and again and again.”
