A baby and three others were reportedly killed this weekend in fresh clashes between Nicaraguan police and protesters. The 18-month-old was being taken to a babysitter when he was hit by a stray bullet near student protests in Managua, according to his mother. “He was killed by a police gunshot. I saw them. They were police,” the mother, Karina Navarrete, said in comments to local media. The local government has denied the claims and said criminals were to blame. The tragedy occurred Saturday during the latest protest against President Daniel Ortega’s rule. More than 200 people have been killed in the last two months amid ongoing demonstrations sparked by government cuts to pensions and social security.
