183 Brotherhood Backers Put on Death Row

TO THE GALLOWS

For clash with Egyptian police in 2013.

Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters were issued death sentences by an Egyptian court on Monday. The 183 men were accused of being involved in killing more than a dozen police officers stationed outside Cairo in an August 2013 attack in response to the ousting of then-President Mohammed Morsi. Of the group convicted, 34 were tried in abstentia. The trial was the latest in Egypt’s mass crackdown against those linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. Thousands have been arrested and tried, which human-rights advocates say is a sign the Egyptian government is actively stiffling competition and oppressing political groups.
