Two Syrians were each sentenced to four years and two months in jail over the September 2015 death of refugee toddler Aylan Kurdi and four others. Images of the boy’s body sparked a global reaction in the days after he washed up on a beach in southwest Turkey. Aylan, 3, and his mother and brother were trying to reach Greece by boat. The two Syrians were each sentenced on smuggling charges, but both were acquitted of causing death through conscious neglect. Aylan’s death was part of a migration crisis that has led to countless drownings: Analysts estimated more than 3,770 migrants died trying to cross the Mediterranean in 2015 alone.
