A second data company has become entangled in the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of private email while she was at the State Department, the firm said Tuesday. Datto, Inc. confirmed the former secretary of state hired the company to provide a private cloud backup of her emails in May 2013 and the firm has agreed to turn over its contents to the FBI. The revelations caught the attention of Republican chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, who sent a letter to Datto requesting information about its role in maintaining the server. Datto was hired by Platte River Networks, which managed the system. Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson’s letter cites internal emails directing Datto to reduce the amount of her emails it was backing up. A Platte River employee aired suspicions and reportedly wrote, “this whole thing really is covering up some shaddy [sic] shit,” according to an excerpt cited by Johnson.
