At least three Canadians were directly involved in kidnapping U.S. citizens in Syria, CBC News reported Wednesday. The Canadians are part of Al Qaeda-linked militant group, Jabhat al-Nusra, and were involved in holding journalists Theo Curtis and Matt Schrier hostage from 2011 to 2013. They took the men’s computer passwords and PINs, draining their banking accounts and writing emails to their loved ones pretending to be them. The Canadian government has previously estimated 130 citizens are overseas fighting for Islamic extremist groups. In recent weeks, it has come to light that multiple Americans have joined Islamic extremist groups in the Middle East, as well.
