Three white students from San Jose State University were found guilty of misdemeanor battery on Monday, but were absolved of a hate crime. The charges stem from a 2013 incident in which the students—Colin Warren, Logan Beaschler, and Joseph "Brett" Bomgardner—allegedly put a bike lock around the neck of black teenager Donald Williams Jr. while attempting to lock him in a closet and display the Confederate flag in a suite they shared. Prosecutors also alleged that the students referred to Williams as "three-fifths" and "fraction."
