Cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad and a trailer for a perhaps nonexistent film inspired around 300 people to riot and chant of “death to France, death to America” in Afghanistan on Thursday. Anti-Western protests in the Muslim world were sparked anew on Wednesday after a French publication ran caricatures of Islam’s holiest figure. While the demonstrations on Thursday were reportedly peaceful, similar protests on Monday took a violent turn when 1,000 people in the Afghan capital turned on police officers, injuring about 50 officers as they set cars ablaze.
