Around 300,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the Indian states of Odisha and Andrha Pradesh on Sunday as a powerful cyclone battered the country’s east coast. The storm, called Cyclone Hudhud (and which has a 15-mile wide eye), hit the city of Visakhapatnam on Sunday afternoon, where there is a major naval base. “There is huge damage,” the chief minister of Andrha Pradesh said. “Even to buildings, trees and also crops. Communication has totally collapsed.” The Japanese island of Okinawa was also hit by a typhoon on Sunday, which is expected to reach the island of Kyushu by Monday. 150,000 Japanese have been told to evacuate there.
