Forty-two people were injured, two seriously, after a bus ran into an overpass, shearing off the top of the vehicle late Sunday night on New York’s Long Island. The accident happened on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 19 in Lakeview when a bus full of students and chaperones was traveling eastbound from JFK International Airport. As well as the two people seriously injured, five others are reported to have moderate injuries. Local ABC outlets reported that 38 students, five chaperones, and one driver were on board and that the students had just returned from a European trip. Police said the driver appeared to be unaware that the bus was too tall to clear the overpass. Maj. David Candelaria, of the New York State Police, said: “I don’t think he had any awareness, because if you look at the damage it’s a high-impact strike. He made it all the way through,” adding: “We’re very lucky. This could have been tragic.”
