At least five predominantly black churches have been damaged or destroyed in fires in the past week, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Three of the five blazes have been declared arson, including in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. Two other fires occurred in South Carolina and Ohio, though it's unclear if they were caused by arson. If investigators conclude the two fires are arson, it would still take additional proof to classify the acts as hate crimes, according to SPLC. The blazes happened just one week after nine people were shot and killed at a historic black Charleston church.
