EightSix people died Wednesday morning after their Florida nursing home was left without power for days since Hurricane Irma hit South Florida, the Miami Herald reported. Police and fire crews began evacuating the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills after several residents fell ill. Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said three of the residents died at the center and others were taken to the hospital. The center reportedly had a generator that allowed them to cook, but did not provide enough power to turn on the air conditioning. Police said they believe the deaths were heat-related and that they are conducting a criminal investigation.
