It wouldn’t be a G8 summit without a rowdy protest. Leaders from the world’s wealthiest countries won’t gather in London until next week, but 57 people have already been arrested. Police raided the headquarters of the group Stop G8, which on Tuesday orchestrated a Carnival Against Capitalism, protesting hedge funds and major banks as well as oil and mining companies. Over 100 officers used chain saws and crowbars to enter an abandoned former police station where about 200 protesters had reportedly been squatting—some of them sticking their heads out the window and yelling antagonistically at the cops. Hundreds more officers have been sent to London in anticipation of more protests against the summit.
