A dozen people may be dead after a magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook Myanmar on Sunday. A gold mine and a bridge were destroyed in the quake, which also damaged a number of historic Buddhist pagodas. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 72 miles from the city of Mandalay, but no major damage was reported in the country’s second-most-populous urban center. Burma has little in the way of an official disaster-response system, and the quake seems to have affected mostly people in rural regions.
