79 Percent of Gulf Oil Remains

Not So Fast

Could be years before it disappears.

The government report that most of the oil in the Gulf of Mexico just disappeared seems to have been wishful thinking: Researchers from the University of Georgia who were at the forefront of investigating underwater plumes say the government was working with incomplete info and that at least 79 percent of the oil and its toxic byproducts still remain in the Gulf of Mexico. "One major misconception is that oil that has dissolved into water is gone and, therefore, harmless," said UGA’s senior investigator. "The oil is still out there, and it will likely take years to completely degrade."
