Eight women have died and dozens more are in the hospital, many of them in critical condition, following a state-run mass sterilization in India, a local official said Tuesday. Many of the more than 80 women who underwent sterilization at the free government-run camp in the central state of Chhattisgarh fell ill shortly afterward, the official told AFP. TV footage showed women on stretchers being rushed to hospital with anxious relatives by their side. Since Monday, eight women have died and 64 are in various hospitals, according to an official in the district where the camp was held.
