Do Egyptians not care about women’s rights, or are they just sick of protests? Either way, a planned Million Woman March in Cairo Tuesday fell far short of expectations. The demonstration, connected with International Women’s Day, drew only about 1,000 participants, and they were heckled by counterdemonstrators who charged them with trying to distort women’s proper role and chanted antifeminist slogans. Marchers responded by pointing to the crucial role played by women in pushing former President Hosni Mubarak from power. The country has long had a reputation for frequent sexual harassment.
