For the past two weeks, a 28-year-old Vancouver, Washington, woman has gained an outpouring of sympathy after reporting that a stranger had approached her in a local park and thrown acid on her face. Now, police investigators have declared it a hoax, saying that the woman, Bethany Storro, inflicted her injuries on herself. Their findings will be passed on to county prosecutors. Storro hasn’t said why she orchestrated the hoax, but she has been using the media attention she garnered in its aftermath to proselytize, telling reporters, “I’m here today because of Jesus Christ.” She also thanked Jesus that she was wearing sunglasses to shield her eyes during the attack. Her wounds, however, are still very real, and she will possibly need skin grafts before she recovers.
