The American Civil Liberties Union has joined a rising tide of human-rights activists calling for a criminal investigation of George W. Bush, after the former president admitted to authorizing torture of terror suspects. Bush writes in his book that he responded, “Damn right!” when asked for permission to waterboard Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged 9/11 attacks mastermind, despite the interrogation technique’s illegal status under both U.S. law and international torture conventions. The ACLU wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder arguing that Bush’s defense of torture is “absolutely without parallel in American history,” and “cannot be ignored.”
