A military commando raid has freed New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell from captivity in Afghanistan, but at a terrible price: the life of his translator. The New York Times reports that armed gunmen seized Farrell and interpreter Sultan Munadi on Saturday while they were reporting on Friday's NATO airstrikes, which exploded two fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban, killing up to 90 people, including many civilians. Early Wednesday, Farrell heard approaching helicopters, then dove into a ditch during the ensuing gunfight, which Munadi did not survive. A British commando also died during the rescue operation.
