Could the aftereffects of Hurricane Irene be more devastating and dangerous than the storm itself? Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin said the state had “a full-blown flooding catastrophe on our hands” as rivers continue to rise and flood entire towns. The state capital, Montpelier, is particularly at risk as the Winooski River is expected to crest at 20 feet. New Jersey too is at risk of flooding. “This storm is transitioning into a flooding event,” Gov. Chris Christie said. “Some rivers have not crested yet.” As of Sunday evening, 4.2 million homes along the East Coast were still without power as a result of the storm.
